Module 4: Trauma-Informed Instructional Practices

In the last two modules, you explored ways trauma can impact a child’s development and education. In Module 4, we will explore trauma-informed instructional practices you can use to improve outcomes for students. We will also learn about mistakes to avoid.

By the end of Module 4, all participants will be able to do the following:

    • Identify the 6 guiding principles of trauma-informed practice.
    • Identify instructional strategies supporting positive outcomes for students who have experienced trauma.
    • Discuss mistakes to avoid when working with students who have experienced trauma (and you may not know who they are).
    • Explain how a “curious approach” can help all adults work with all students.

You are going on a Scavenger Hunt! As you journey through the resources in this module, you are going to be documenting your learning (i.e., trauma-informed instructional practices) in a table on the Scavenger Hunt document.  You will submit this document as an assignment.

To successfully complete Module 4, please do the following:

    1. Open the attached Bitmoji PDF, “Module 4 Resources,” to access Module 4 materials.
    2. Download and open the document titled “Scavenger Hunt”.  You will document trauma-informed instructional practices as you work your way through the resources. An example has been done for you.
    3. Within the Module 4 Resources PDF, click on the poster on the wall to familiarize yourself with the 6 guiding principles of trauma-informed practice. (You will need to know these for the table you will be completing during your “Scavenger Hunt”.)
    4. Explore the resources in the Module 4 Resources PDF, including the magazines and newspaper on the bookshelf, the VHS tape, the laptop, and the open book on the couch. (You can click on the objects, and you will be taken to the corresponding websites for each resource.). Read the resources and watch videos to identify effective trauma-informed instructional practices.
    5. Submit your completed Scavenger Hunt documentation to turn in your Module 4 assignment. Be sure to include at least five (5) distinct strategies. (50 points)
    6. Finally, complete the Module 4 quiz. You may use any and all course resources to respond to the prompts. (20 points)

Please do not hesitate to email your instructor(s) if you have any questions!
