Module 3: Impact of ACEs on a Student’s Education

In the last module, you explored ways trauma can impact a child’s development. In Module 3, we will explore trauma and how it affects education.

    • By the end of Module 3, all participants will be able to do the following:
    • Take the Adverse Childhood Experience test and understand the how it identifies students with trauma
    • Identify how trauma impacts learning, behavior, and relationships in schools
    • Discuss the impact of trauma in Mississippi
    • Explain how students with ACEs affect the learning environment

 

To successfully complete Module 3, please do the following:

    1. Watch the Module 3 video below comprised of 3 short videos (total 17 minutes). Create 3 slides in Google Slides or Microsoft PowerPoint explaining one main idea discussed in each video. Save as a PDF, and upload your PDF to submit.  This is graded according to the attached rubric. (15 points)
    2. Read this article and complete the ACE test. Reflect on what this quiz might reveal about a child who has experienced trauma.
    3. Review the data on the chart for ACEs in Mississippi at this link (check out the “Mississippi Summary 2020” tab), and read the facts in the attached document, “ACES in Mississippi”. Complete the Google Form entitled EDUCATION AND ACEs at this link. (5 points)
    4. Using the information from this module so far and “10 Things about Childhood Trauma Every Teacher Needs to Know”, create a thinking map on how trauma affects the school environment. Upload map to submit. (Click the link inside the website to create a particular kind of thinking map.) (5 points)
