Module 6: Trauma and COVID-19

You have now defined trauma and ACEs, learned how trauma impacts brain development and education, explored trauma-informed instructional practices, and identified characteristics of trauma-sensitive schools. Whew!

 

In this final module, you will examine a time-sensitive topic, COVID-19, and its effects on our students and learning.

 

By the end of Module 6, all participants will be able to do the following:

    • Identify how to discuss COVID-19 with students
    • Identify ways to support students with social-emotional needs in distance learning
    • Discuss how to and the benefits of building relationships during the COVID-19 crisis

 

To successfully complete Module 6, please do the following:

    1. Download the attached Module 6 Assignment Packet.
    2. Watch the Module 6 video below.
    3. Watch and read “Talk to Kids about Coronavirus”.
    4. Read the NEA article “Talking to Students about Coronavirus” and this article from the Child Mind Institute. Create a guideline document containing recommendations you could share with others on the appropriate ways to talk with children about COVID-19 to avoid increasing trauma. Requirement: Five guidelines minimum. (30 points)
    5. Read “Trauma-Informed Approach to Teaching” and post to this Padlet. Discuss an approach you found to use for each category in the Padlet. (20 points)
    6. Read the articles “3 ways teachers can integrate SEL into online learning” and “Meeting students’ social-emotional needs during a COVID-19 lockdown”. Create a document containing a list of strategies you could share or use in a providing support for students during COVID-19. (20 points)
    7. Review the attached Developmental Relationships Framework and the attached Checklist for Building Relationships During the COVID-19 Crisis. Reflect on how building relationships will reduce the impact of trauma on students and how COVID-19 has changed your approach to teaching or learning. (50 points)
    8. Upload your completed assignment packet to submit.
